Iron Rich Byproduct Landfill Construction and Closure K. S. Ware and Associates, L.L.C. (KSWA) was selected by E.I Du Pont De Nemours & Company (DuPont) to provide quality assurance/quality control services for its Iron Rich Products solid waste landfill at its plant in New Johnsonville, Tennessee. DuPont is an industry leader in delivering science-based solutions in markets such as food and nutrition, health care, apparel, home and construction, electronics and transportation. DuPont was primarily an explosives company when it began approximately 200 years ago. Approximately one hundred years ago, their focus turned to global chemicals, materials and energy. Today, the firm delivers science-based solutions to a variety of different clients. The DuPont plant in New Johnsonville is one of the largest production facilities for titanium dioxide in the world. During the manufacturing process for the titanium dioxide, DuPont produces a bi-product consisting of iron rich product. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has mandated this bi-product be disposed in a solid waste landfill. KSWA provided quality assurance/quality control services for the construction of Cells 2, 3, and 4 for the storage of Iron Rich Product at the DuPont New Johnsonville Plant, and in 2001 provided quality assurance/quality control services for the closure of Cell 1. KSWA is pleased to have provided these services to meet the needs for E.I. DuPont De Nemours to supply a safe and environmentally friendly disposal of this New Johnsonville Plant iron rich product. Environmental Management Waste Management Facility K. S. Ware and Associates, L.L.C. (KSWA) was selected by the Bechtel Jacobs Joint Venture (BJJV) to provide Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) testing for the structural fill, geologic buffer material, clay liner, synthetic liner and leachate collection systems for the proposed Oak Ridge Environmental Management Waste Management Facility (EMWMF). The facility would be located in Bear Creek Valley near the center of the 58-square mile reservation, located approximately 15 miles northwest of Knoxville, Tennessee. The footprint of the facility to be used for waste disposal will be between 22 and 44 acres, depending on the final determination of the size needed. The total area for the project including support facilities and buffer zone, will be approximately 64 and 98 acres. The EMWMF will only accept waste from CERCLA remedial actions conducted on the Oak Ridge Reservation. Sources of debris for the landfill will be building decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) at the East Tennessee Technology Park, and building and reactor D&D at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The waste storage facility has an above ground disposal cell with some waste placed below ground, 5-10 feet geological buffer between base of cell and water table, 16 feet thick cap with bio-intrusion layer, and double-lined with geo-synthetic clay liner and flexible membrane liner to allow collection of the leachate. The testing included Proctor tests, Atterberg Limits tests, Sieve analysis, Compaction test, Hydraulic conductivity and summary test reports. Balefill Landfill Closure Lawrence County, Tennessee K. S. Ware and Associates, L.L.C. (KSWA) was selected by JWS & Associates (JWS) to provide construction quality assurance services for the closure of the Balefill Landfill located near Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. In September 2001, the City of Lawrenceburg reached full capacity at this landfill. The landfill was twenty-one and a half acres and had been in operation since the early 1980’s. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) issued an order in September 2001 to cease operations and close the landfill by capping it with a two-foot thick layer of low permeability clay. Due to the location of the landfill and the time constraints placed by TDEC, acceptable clay borrow material was not available. Since no material was available, closure of the landfill required the placement of a Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL). This landfill was one of the first landfills in Middle Tennessee to be closed using a GCL. KSWA personnel monitored the placement of the intermediate cover, installation of the leachate collection system, installation of the methane gas vents, placement and covering of the GCL, and placement of the vegetative cover associated with the closure of the landfill. KSWA provided fast and accurate test data as well as site progress photos on a daily basis to JWS via the KSWA website. Providing this data on the website permitted JWS & Associates to monitor the progress of the landfill closure from their office, saving time and costly trips to the jobsite. Spallation Neutron Source U. S. Department of Energy K. S. Ware and Associates, L.L.C. (KSWA) was selected by the Knight Jacobs Joint Venture (KJJV) to provide Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) testing for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator-based neutron source under construction in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, by the U.S. Department of Energy. The SNS will provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development. Construction began in 1999 and will be completed in 2006 at a total cost of approximately $1.4 billion. The site excavation has been completed, and the remaining construction is underway. The CQA testing includes compaction testing of fill soils, foundation evaluations, concrete and grout field testing, laboratory compressive strength tests, and structural steel inspections. KSWA also provided Construction Quality Control (CQC) testing for the Target building drilled steel pipe piles. This testing was performed by two engineering technicians working back to back twelve-hour shifts during the nearly twenty-four hour a day schedule to install over 400 piles. This testing was provided to Nicholson Haywood Baker JV, who are among the international industry leaders in construction drilling. |
