Position Description:

This position is for a Geotechnical Engineer with a minimum of 20 years experience in the performance of geotechnical explorations and related project work.  This person will be an integral part of a large and complex Profit Center, which provides Geotechnical Engineering and related services to USACE, DOTs throughout the SE, Airports (general aviation and large commercial) and Municipal Agencies.  Typical work assignments include:

  • Sr. Project Management of large and complex, multi-disciplined projects in the earth science arena
  • Team member of large, multi-disciplined teams, reviewing Levee and Dam Safety issues throughout the country
  • Reviewing proposals for complex, multi-disciplined projects
  • Assigning, providing QC function and reviewing field and lab data for geotechnical investigations
  • Writing and reviewing geotechnical and construction materials testing reports
  • Execution of marketing strategies within the Market Segments identified below
  • Implementing QA and QC procedures/checklists and performing internal audits
  • Oversight of lab operations from an internal and accreditation perspective
  • Mentoring less experienced geotechnical engineers, construction inspectors and field technicians

 

Market Segments served include:

  • Federal (U. S. Department of Defense, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers)
  • State (Dept of Transportation)
  • Municipal Agencies (Water Department, Public Works)
  • Airports (General aviation and large commercial)

Reporting To:

The candidate will report to a Senior Geotechnical Engineer/Group Leader, but is expected to be a leader within the organization and actively participate in leadership of the company.  Individual can expect to interact with leaders and owners of the firm on a daily basis.

Experience Required:

Graduation from an ABET accredited school of engineering, with a BS in Civil Engineering, and a minimum of 20 years of direct related experience.  Candidate must be a licensed professional engineer within the state of Tennessee or be capable of obtaining a license by reciprocity within 6 months. A graduate degree in Civil or Geotechnical engineering is a plus.

This person must be able to demonstrate experience in providing senior level project management of geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing in support of the following types of projects:

  • Interstate Highway Design, including bridges
  • LRFD Highway design
  • State and local roadway design, including bridges and culverts
  • Airports: Apron, Taxiway, Runway, Hangar Space
  • Dam and Levee Safety compliance studies or evaluations
  • Various foundation designs for buildings, including spread footings, piles, caissons, etc.
  • Pavement failure investigations
  • Slope failures
  • Retaining wall failures
  • Post-tensioning Steel
  • Mass concrete placements, such as dams, etc
  • Instrumentation Studies

This position does not include sales.  However, the individual should have been responsible for client service on projects similar to those outlined above and be comfortable with management of client expectations and directing others to meet those expectations.

  • The ability to communicate effectively with other professionals with diverse technical backgrounds
  • The ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with clients
  • The ability and desire to lead other, lesser experienced geotechnical professionals in the development of their careers
  • The ability and desire to contribute to the overall successful operation of the Geotechnical Profit Center and the Company as a whole
  • Experience in the use of all MS Office software, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, etc.
  • Proven experience with gInt, pLog, slope stability and other related engineering software packages

Salary Range:           

Compensation is on salaried basis (exempt), commensurate with experience and training, with the opportunity to advance to other positions upon satisfactory performance of job duties.
